The Meaning
Behind our Name
Have you ever wondered why we are called Nu Angle Orthodontics? There is actually a deeper meaning to our name which many people might not know about - Part of our name was in fact inspired by Dr Edward Hartley Angle (1855-1930), the acknowledged founder of modern orthodontics!
Dr Angle had a humble beginning as the fifth of seven children of a dairy farming family. He demonstrated talent for devising tools at an early age. He was introduced to dentistry at the age of 18, when his mum, recognising his mechanical skills secured an office apprentice position for him with a dentist. This appealed so much to his manual and visual senses and his love of tools and need for orderliness that he went on to apply and study dentistry at the College of Dental Surgery. As a dentist, he became interested in developing tooth-regulating appliances. Amongst his many professional life accomplishments he is noted for:
- Framing orthodontics as a dental specialty and establishing the world’s first educational program to train orthodontists
- Introducing a classification system for orthodontic conditions and
- Developing the first prefabricated orthodontic appliance system.
He was indeed a remarkable man, a visionary scholar with a creative mind and a genius at devising and working with tools!
